PART II. SECTION 6: WHAT IS THE CHRIST?
Lesson 277 Let Me Not Bind Your Son With Laws I Made.
- Your Son is free, my Father. Let me not imagine I have bound him with the laws I made to rule the body. He is not subject to any laws I made by which I try to make the body more secure. He is not changed by what is changeable. He is not slave to any laws of time. He is as You created him because he knows no law except the law of love.
- Let us not worship idols, nor believe in any law idolatry would make to hide the freedom of the Son of God. He is not bound except by his beliefs. Yet what he is, is far beyond his faith in slavery or freedom. He is free because he is his Father’s Son. And he cannot be bound unless God’s truth can lie, and God can will that He deceive Himself.
Oh, Most High, as I bow my head this morning and ask for Your illumination on the lesson today, I am so thrilled with the words – Your Son is free! How could I bind him with laws this ego world made to rule the body; the laws that I have gone along with for far too long!
At first, I balked at the lesson. Laws I made to rule the body? Are you kidding? I didn’t make those rules. I am not responsible for those rules. This world and its long list of do’s and don’ts to keep the body safe have always been a troublesome burden – the body itself a dimwitted pet constantly demanding something! Hunger, grooming, exercise, sleep, stimulation, sex, bathroom needs, appreciation needs, appetite control needs – the list goes on. Then consider the changing dietary rules: Take your daily vitamins – no, don’t take vitamins – get your nutrients from real food; drink three to four glasses of milk a day, no, don’t drink milk – it hardens your arteries – get your calcium through eating fish, oh wait a minute, fish have mercury, don’t eat fish…Low in Vitamin D? Sit out in the sun for 20 minutes a day – oh, no! Don’t sit in the sun else you get melanoma. Eat fish – wait a minute – fish? I thought…
“Listen here, Teacher, there is no way I made those laws,” I said. I just showed up here. I didn’t like them from the start. But then I was reminded of a philosophical story I heard yesterday. There was Uncle A and Uncle B. Both Uncles had an eight-year-old nephew, the only person who stood between them and a vast fortune. Uncle A drowned his nephew to get the fortune. Uncle B stood by and watched his nephew drown when he had every opportunity and the wherewithal to help him. Was it Uncle A or Uncle B, who caused their nephews’ deaths? What is your response?
Just because Uncle B showed up and had not arranged the circumstances of his nephew’s drowning death, he went along with the conditions and did nothing to stop it from happening. In my book, and in Lover’s opinion, we thought that Uncle B was just as culpable as Uncle A. Other’s may have another response, but we both agreed that Uncle B caused the death of his nephew by merely doing nothing.
Now Holy Spirit was showing me that when I do nothing but go along with the laws made to bind God’s Son, I am responsible for making the laws by merely upholding them. When I do not share the good news that the Son of God is free, I am much like Uncle B, who stands by and watches his nephew drown rather than risk losing the fortune that would otherwise come to him.
However, there is no fortune to be gained in doing this. For our security does not come from body security; our safety and everlastingness do not come from status in the world, or popularity, genealogy, or wealth. Our security does not come from going to the gym or taking vitamins or getting enough sleep.
Dear Heavenly Father, Our security cannot be changed nor
be a slave to time, because we are as You created us, O Most High, eternal
spirit made in Your image and one with You.
Your Son need heed no laws except the law of love. When we practice the law of love, we are
fulfilling all the unnecessary laws below and surrounding it. Love is the fulfillment of the law,
and for this, we ask to be our daily practice and toward that Which we become. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
